As I try to muster through my depression that was brought on by NOT being able to attend Mondo’s Universal Monsters Show in Austin Texas this weekend I have been scouring the web for exceptional coverage of the event.  Today, I found such coverage over at Film School Rejects website.  Of course as glad as I am to FIND this wonderful imagery, it has only sealed my fate, I SHALL be eating a LOT of coffee ice cream over the rest of the weekend in an attempt to lessen my anguish.

Uhhhh…yes, that is DREW STRUZAN, the man who single handily revolutionized and changed movie posters forever.  Drew was in attendance showing off some original work.  (All of which, I want.)

Uhhhh…yes, Frank Darabont and Robert Rodriguez were also in attendance.  Seriously, coffee ice cream might not be enough, I’m slipping deeper into depression at an alarming rate.

I can’t post any more pictures due to the fact that it is hard to see the screen through my tears.  Head over to see the complete coverage from FRS/ Film School Rejects.  There are TONS of great pictures featuring art that you will absolutely want and desire.

Exclusive Sneak Peek...

Exclusive Sneak Peek…

Another day and another entry into our 7 Artsist X 1 Interview series.  Today we take a look at MARVELous Matt Ferguson or as many of us know him…Cakes and Comics“.  We have been a fan since his alternate posters for the movie Chronicle and his two outings with Marvel Studios.  He describes himself as follows:  “I am a freelance Graphic Designer working in the UK. I am a huge geek and love to make geeky art in my free time.”  He had a great 2012 and 2013 is going to be even bigger for this Talented Trekkie.

BLURPPY:  How would YOU describe your style or how would YOU like it described.  You always get OUR/ BLOGGER point of view, let’s hear from YOU.

Matt Ferguson:  The term that is most often applied to my artwork is ‘minimalist‘.  I feel like my work isn’t wholly minimalist, I do like to reduce aspects of the subject down, but also think the compositions and detail I add are more of an ‘old school‘ traditional film poster style. I guess a fusion of minimalist and traditional is how I would describe my style… um not very catchy I know, I will let other people decide! What other people say about my stuff usually makes it sound so much better!!

BLURPPY:  Personally I love how you translate action and power using your ‘minimalist / traditional style.   How did you get started in the “poster” scene?  What was your FIRST print?

Matt's art for the upcoming Avengers Box Set.

Matt’s art for the upcoming Avengers Box Set.

M.F.:  I first got started by doing a piece based on the Avengers that ended up being really popular online, so much so it got the attention of the guys making the film and I ended up sending over a print of the Hulk segment for Mark Ruffalo. Also it is now official art used by Marvel! So it spurred me on to create more.

BLURPPY:  NAME DROPPER!  You know, I once sat on a couch next to Drew Barrymore in L.A. and had drinks with Chris Isaak and then Judd Nelson so I too have had a brush or two with stardom ya know.  What are your 3 favorite pieces that you have done that you feel really show off your talent or truly capture a subject you love.

M.F.:  My three favorite pieces are my original Avengers Assemble poster, The Fog movie poster and my Iron Man 3 teaser poster.

Avengers Assemble

Avengers Assemble

The Fog

The Fog

BLURPPY:  I love the transition from water to air in the Iron Man 3 teaser. What would be your dream project?  What would you KILL to work on?  This can be a real project or something crazy like “design the next Death Star for Lord Vader.”

M.F.:  My most recent dream project would be to work on art for Star Trek Into Darkness. I am a huge long time fan, especially of the original series which certainly influences me now in my use of color. If anybody can make this happen for me then please…”make it so” (cringe).

Blade Runner

Blade Runner

BLURPPY:  I my have to talk to J.J. Abrams or Damon Lindelof for you on this one.  (I hope you don’t rile up the other Trekkies with your Picard quote.  Purist will want a Shatner reference for sure.)  I would love to see you do something for that film!  Give us an idea of what is your process like?  How do you get started?

M.F.:  It is a fairly simple creative process. Firstly decide on a subject matter, this is usually the easy part being the geek that I am. Usually my first idea is best, I then do a lot of research and gather together as many images as I can. I then spend time looking at the mess I have assembled and try and reduce it down into something more elegant. Finally I put everything together in Photoshop by drawing with my Wacom, collaging and lots more refinement.

BLURPPY:  Whose work do you follow, love, crave?  Any specific pieces by these artists that stand out to you?

M.F.:  I am a huge fan of all the guys and gals in the Print Posse (hash tag it!), there is a gang of us on Twitter and they definitely feed my creativity. Seeing the awesome work they produce makes me want to do more and get better.

Spawn vs. Violator by Greg Capullo

I also have to say that without the work of the artist Greg Capullo on Spawn back in the 90′s I don’t know if I would have ever had an interest in becoming an artist… so thanks Greg! And finally Drew Struzan and his classic work on some of my favorite films, his Back To The Future poster just can’t be beaten.

Back To The Future by Drew Struzan

BLURPPY:  The PrintPosse is spectacular and Capullo is worth following on Twitter. The work that he and Struzan have done speaks for itself. How do you see the whole “pop-culture poster craze” evolving?  What is your hope for it?

-0M.F.:  I would love it to become the industry standard. I have already been involved with Marvel on the Avengers and also I did some work to help promote Chronicle for Fox. There is a real chance for the studios to really take advantage and have marketing campaigns for their movies that are not just the usual Photoshopped pictures of actors quickly pasted into generic looking posters. I would love nothing more than to be able to help design and create entire marketing campaigns for films… billboards, posters, trailers, commercials and online marketing. My dream job basically!

starwarsprintempireprintjediprintBLURPPY:  I‘ve seen your Star Wars stuff and love it.  Maybe you could work on the new movies that are coming out? What is your “can’t live without possession?”….NO KIDS or PETS!

M.F.:  I would say most likely my iPad. It is invaluable in the early stages of creating new artwork. I never knew I needed one so much until I got the thing.

DROKK!!!

DROKK!!!

BLURPPY:  I’m pretty addicted to mine as well. I’m always dragging it around taking pictures for Instagram with it. What is your favorite guilty pleasure?…..ham, Honey Boo-Boo, Junior mints, American Pickers, coffee ice cream, long walks on the beach….etc…

M.F.:  I would say my ever expanding Transformers collection. I am a sucker for expensive Japanese imports.

Hong Kong Purchase

BLURPPY:  How is 2013 shaping up for you so far?  Any projects/ shows/ collaborations you can talk about or tease?

M.F.:  Well it is only January! honestly I think this year is going to be one of the best for me in terms of artwork. The Avengers box set comes out in April. Also I am involved with several galleries in LA, Brooklyn and Paris doing some pretty cool artwork. (Here is a small preview of one of them titled “Mystery”) I hope to come over to the US at some point soon which I am very excited about.

Mystery

Mystery

BLURPPY:  YES, come over to SDCC!  That would be the perfect opportunity!  Maybe participate in a show at Gallery 1988 or Phonebooth Gallery while you are here and then back across the pond with you!  Your “Mystery” print has me intrigued.  Looks like something for X-Men but one can’t be too sure…What is your favorite movie of all time and why?

M.F.:  My favorite movie has to be Escape From New York. It was the film that first popped into my head when I read the question. But for me it hard to say just one, I honestly struggle to select a top ten at times…. everything is my favorite.

Carpenterzescape

BLURPPY:  You did a great job on that one.  Kurt Russell was a bad ass in it.  He also was incredible in “Big Trouble In Little China” but alas, you have yet to do a print for that one.  (Hint-hint)  Ok, pick one thing from each line as your favorite:

Peanut butter and jelly or Ham and cheese:  Ham and Cheese
Whedon’s AVENGERS or Nolan’s DARK KNIGHT RETURNS:  Avengers, obviously! (Obviously!)
Summer on the West Coast or Fall in New England: Summer on the west Coast I guess, but I am yet to experience either. It just rains here… all year!
Kubrick’s The Shining Movie or King’s The Shining Book:  Kubrick’s film for sure. The carpets alone are enough.

1stanley_kubrick_the_shining_carpet_740_370
Morning or night:  Morning
Pizza or sushi:  Pizza
Justin Bieber or Gangnam style:  The Biebs!
Cats or dogs:  Cats
Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd:  Led Zeppelin
Charlie Brown Christmas or It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown:  Charlie Brown Christmas

I would like to thank Matt for his time with this interview and his complete enthusiasm for the exclusive Blurppy project.  I keep getting messages from him saying, “Is all the art in?“  “Can’t wait to see everything!“.  If we were to summarize what we learned from his words today I would say that 2012 was just the tip of the iceberg for this guy, we gotta get his work in front of J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot and Damon Lindelof and he has all of Justin Bieber’s music.

Screen Shot 2013-05-07 at 2.09.52 PMBlurppy has featured the art of Mexican artist Rodolfo Reyes a few times before, (HERE, HERE and HERE) and we are thrilled to have him as a featured artist in our second exclusive Poster Posse Project which will be dropping on BLURPPY.COM this May 13th at 9 am.  We got a chance to talk with him and here is what he had to say.

Nosferatu By Rodolfo Reyes“Nosferatu” by Rodolfo Reyes – Regular & Variant Edition – available HERE

BLURPPY- How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

RRI started about two years ago, and was basically for fun I created some Batman posters in art deco and upload it to my deviantart page, I didn´t expect such great reception from the media, It was a nice surprise.

 Iron-Man-Rodolfo-Reyes3Iron Man” – Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

RRIn a sense it is a full time job , I also work as a freelance graphic designer, but fortunately the illustration work has become steady.

BLURPPY- Whose work do you admire or collect?

RRWell Aside the classic Renaissance artists and surreal painters, I love movie posters and I like to collect some of the best from the finest artists like: Drew Struzan and John Alvin. I also like most of the posters from the Mondo website especially the ones by Laurent Durieux.

the_sparrow_by_rodolforever-d38mtg0“The Sparrow” by Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- Durieux’s work IS fantastic. Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wizard of Oz…I could fill my house with his prints. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

RRThere is a beautiful print from THE IRON GIANT by Laurent Durieux which I think is just gorgeous.

Laurent-Durieux-Iron-Giant“Iron Giant” – Laurent Durieux

BLURPPY- Everything is perfect with that print.  The color palette, the tone, everything. I also loved his Metropolis print.  The detail was pretty mind-blowing. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh? (This is NOT a hygiene question.)

RRWell the main thing is to stick to a style of your own and that doesn’t look like anybody else´s, of course its always good to experiment and upgrade your skills and techniques whether digital or traditional.

zombie_hellcats_by_rodolforever-d59k4yxZombie Hellcats – Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Exclusive, what is your dream project?

RRWell one of my dreams is to keep working on prints and illustrations and maybe one day create the poster for a feature film… that would be great.

Screen Shot 2013-05-07 at 1.40.47 PMSkyfall and “Inception” by Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

RRNo idea, I guess working on something art related, because there is nothing else I like more than this.

BLURPPY- What movies are you excited to see this year?

RRStar Trek: INTO DARKNESS of course, also Pacific Rim and Only God Forgives.

-0salems_lot_poster_by_rodolforever-d37ktx7“Salem’s Lot” by Rodolfo Reyes – available HERE

BLURPPY- What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

RRThat´s tricky, I like a lot. The “M” print, which is a film by Fritz Lang. I think it’s one of those posters that came along very beautifully.

Screen Shot 2013-05-07 at 1.11.01 PM“M” by Rodolfo Reyes available HERE

BLURPPY- I like the clever way you have the streetlights making the bottom part of the M. Very well done. What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

RRMaybe is the tendency for doing remakes in films or TV, I think some of them are good or even great…but almost 9 out of ten are crap. What bothers me is that they now favor remakes instead of original ideas.

 -0-highlander_poster_by_rodolforever-d3a8c4m

“Highlander” by Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- The fact that they are re-doing Weird Science seems like sacrilege! What’s next, Close Encounters, The Great Escape, Jaws?! What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

RRThey recently asked me to attend the London Film and Comic Convention in United Kingom, man that felt good..

BLURPPY- Ok, on the flip side, what was your most embarrassing moment?

RRNone so far, thank God. Hahaha…

-0-tick_tock_movie_poster_by_rodolforever-d3iuojzTick Tock (short film poster) by Rodolfo Reyes

BLURPPY- What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

RRSomeone asked me once: ‘What does it feel to be a famous artist?’ and I don’t consider myself to be one yet hahaha but it was a flattering question.

BLURPPY- What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet.”

RRAs I told you before I am attending the London Comic & Film Convention this summer, there I´ll exhibit some of my new prints and some old classics, I also was featured in the Vol. 2 of the Alternative Movie Posters book realeased about a month ago, I am currently working on an animated project but it´s going to be released in 2014 I think.

Ok, here are 10 quick questions….GO !!!

DC or Marvel?

RRMMM ..interesting question; my all time favorite comic character is Batman, so I should go with DC, but with the exception of Batman on DC, I find the Marvel characters more interesting.

Most Desired Super Power?

RRThe power to control metal like Magneto, Man, that would be so badass!

Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

RRDarth Vader, It just strikes you visually in a great way, It´s not just the villain in the original trilogy he just steals the show anyway you see it.

Best movie snack?

RRPop Corn of course, you can´t watch a movie without pop corns!

Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

RRBatman The Animated series and maybe Thundercats, I also liked the Twilight Zone re-runs and Quantum Leap.

What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

RR – You can purchase some of my prints at DARK CITY GALLERY, check out my artwork on my Deviantart page as well as my TUMBLR page.

What’s your favorite pop culture event?

RRI like to go to the movie events.

Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

RRBatman is my all time favorite character, cause it´s a very human and layered character and it´s almost as dangerous as the criminals he hunts, I also like the idea of a man devoting his life to one purpose and train mentally and physically to achieve it …it´s a great example of what WILL can do.

Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars?

RRI am happy, I think J.J. Abrams is a very good director and is perfectly suited for the job, He just needs to keep the lens-flare to the minimum here, that´s all. hahaha I would love to see Steven Spielberg direct at least one..that would be very special.

Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel?

RRI would prefer Blade Runner, in a sense it´s more close to my style and Blade Runner is one of those films you keep discovering things with each viewing.

Blurppy would like to thank Rodolfo for taking the time to participate in our second Poster Posse Project.  Here is a little tease of what he has in store for fans on May 13th at 9 am PST.

Artist Interview: Joe Vetoe The Lazy Engineer?

$
0
0

I knew I loved Joe’s work the first time I say his take on Zoe Saldana for Columbiana but I absolutely knew I wanted him in the Poster Posse when I saw his Twitter tagline which says, “Engineer by day.  Artist by night.  Pretty lazy on the weekends.“  Blurppy got the chance to talk with Joe and see if he truly kicks his feet up on Saturdays and Sundays.  With his talent, I have a feeling he keeps quite busy. Here is what he had to say.

Columbiana-Joe-VetoeBLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

JVI’ve always been really into movies and television and cartoons.  The first thing I can really remember is Garfield.  I’d say I’ve been creating pop culture art pretty steady for the last 4 or 5 years now. I used to do a lot of portraits and things like that and it wasn’t very gratifying so I decided one day I was just going to create things I wanted to create. Unless my mom asks for something and then I do what she asks.

BLURPPY – I’m don’t know…personally, I love the portrait stuff that I have seen.  Don’t give it up completely.  (Unless your Mom says so, then all bets are off.) Is art your full time job?  If not, what else do you do?

JVCurrently art is not my full time job.  I work for a small software company that’s really great to work for.  It doesn’t really allow me a creative outlet but it does pay those pesky bills that pop up every month or so.

BLURPPY – Bills schmills, artists can literally print their own money with posters, tees and such.  Quit the day job and venture into the unknown…the world… of full-time freelance!  Whose work do you admire or collect?

bounty_hunters_ken_taylor4Bounty Hunters – Ken Taylor

JVFor my money Ken Taylor is the best poster artist working today.  The detail in his work is stunning. The pictures of his prints never do the real print justice.  I think he’s brilliant.  And Martin Ansin.  Right now they are two of my favorites.

BLURPPY – This damn Bounty Hunter series will haunt me forever!  Absolutely one of my top 6 prints of all time.  Ok…. these ARE my top 6 prints of all time!  Here is a very sad story…I was standing at the Mondo table at SDCC a couple of years ago, they actually had them ALL on the wall along with the wood versions of Ansin’s Mummy and Dracula and I had… NO….MONEY!  They were right there!  Just out of reach but alas, it was not meant to be.  I figure some day I’ll just up and sell a kidney and buy them on ebay for a ridiculously exorbitant amount.  Ok, back to you….what one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.42.24 PMFrankenstein – Struzan/ Taylor

JVI think the Frankenstein collaboration between Drew Struzan and Ken Taylor is the best thing Mondo has ever put out. I don’t have a copy personally (it is my dream print!) but I have seen it in person and it is AMAZING. I mean it’s DREW STRUZAN! How can you go wrong teaming him with Ken Taylor. Love that print.

BLURPPY – I know, I know. I can still remember when they went on sale.  My best friend Larry got one…me…another swing and a miss.  I covet it every time I walk into his office.  I would ask him to leave it to me in his will but I wouldn’t trust my actions if I knew that was in a legal document somewhere.  With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.15.36 PMJVI try to do different styles with different prints.  If you look at the Bond one I did for Hero Complex Gallery (or the Into Darkness print for BLURPPY) and then look at my Inglorious Basterds print, they are completely different and you probably wouldn’t be able to to tell it was the same artist.  I just try to do some different styles so that it stays fresh for me. Some people think that may hurt me some in the long run because, for example, if you see a Tyler Stout print you know it’s a Tyler Stout print without question.  So my work won’t be recognizable in the same way, but I like trying different ways of creating so it works for me.

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.16.32 PMBond Print by Joe Vetoe for Hero Complex Gallery

BLURPPY – Well it’s working for me too because I love your prints. Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Exclusive, what is your dream project?

Star Trek Into Darkness - Joe VetoeStar Trek Into Darkness – Regular Edition – Joe Vetoe (Click HERE for Variant Version)

JVI would love to do a Die Hard print for Mondo.  It’s my favorite movie of all time and I think it would be so much fun to do.

BLURPPY – Mondo IS great, I drink the Koolaid on a regular basis, buy why wait?  Do a Die Hard print or series for yourself. Who knows, maybe THAT work will be the stuff that has them call you to participate in their next gallery show in Austin?  (Just my two cents, no one ever listens to me, figure it out on your own. Forget I even mentioned it.)  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.31.53 PM12 Monkeys/ Bruce Willis – Joe Vetoe

JVI’d like to write screenplays.  I optioned a screenplay once that was a super exciting time.  The option expired and nothing ever happened with it, but I got to talk to some very cool people like Morgan Freeman. So it was totally worth it!

BLURPPY – Uhhhh yes…. Morgan Freakin’ Freeman.  You do know he is so good that he actually played GOD right?  We are going to have to talk more about this screenplay scenario.  I want to know what it was all about but lets continue.  What movies are you excited to see this year?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.34.11 PMIs it better to be feared or respected? – Joe Vetoe

JVIron Man 3 (which I saw and loved!) Star Trek Into Darkness, Man of Steel, Only God Forgives, Elysium, The World’s End, Gravity, Anchorman 2, and I think Pacific Rim is the one I’m most looking forward to.  It looks like everything the Transformers franchise should have been and wasn’t.

BLURPPY – Pacific Rim looks insane and I agree, if Transformers had come out looking like this… well, I can’t disparage the series, I HAVE watched it dozens upon dozens of time with my son.  I’m pretty handy with a NERF sword thanks to Optimus Prime so I have THAT going for me. What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.25.32 PMJeff Bridges – Joe Vetoe

JVIt’s probably the print I did of Jeff Bridge’s from the movie, Crazy Heart.  The pic I used for reference (especially that beard) and my “swirl” technique I feel just really worked well together.  I really like the way that one turned out.  AND I got some great advice from fellow PosterPosse member Tracie Ching on that one! She had no idea who I was. I just sent her an email and asked for some advice and she was really kind and gave me some pointers.

BLURPPY – She’s great.  She is actually the very first artist Blurppy EVER spoke to and she couldn’t have been kinder.  Her art hangs proudly on my walls.  What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

The Life Aquatic - Tracie ChingThe Life Aquatic – Tracie Ching

JVeBay flippers! There are a lot folks who are really passionate about prints that get released and because of the short supply and heavy demand eBay flippers try to gouge them.  Mondo sells out in like 2 minutes and 2 and half minutes later they are on eBay for 3 to even 10 times the original cost.  I just feel bad for the true fans that can’t get them because of that.

BLURPPY – Wait a minute…I have some decent stuff in my flat file, are you saying I can sell it on ebay and use that money to buy my beloved BOUNTY HUNTER SERIES and keep my kidney in the process?  Nah…kidney’s are overrated, that sucker is GONE!  What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

JVIt would have to be Hero Complex’s Righteous Rides.  Because it was actually my first show.  Adam was great to work with and he took a took a chance and allowed me to be in the show, and I’ll always be appreciative of that.

BLURPPY – I’ve met Adam and he is a great guy. I have a strong feeling you two will be working together again before the calendar reads 2014. What was your most embarrassing moment?

Screen Shot 2013-05-16 at 10.50.14 PMI like the way you die, boy – Joe Vetoe

JVA few years ago my friends got me “slightly” intoxicated and somehow talked me into participating in a toga contest at a local bar.  Turned out I was the only person who participated and since I was “slightly” intoxicated I didn’t realize my friends had made the toga of a Bambi sheet.  That’s right. A sheet with scenes from Bambi on it.

BLURPPY – I actually talked to your friends after you and I spoke and they sent me a picture of the Bambi toga evening.  Click HERE to see it. What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

JVThe one I just answered. Bambi sheet.

BLURPPY – Yeah…kinda hard to top “Bambi toga“.  What do you have on tap for the rest of 2013 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk  about it yet

JVI’m doing a couple of more show for HCG and I have 2 prints in the Daft Punk show coming up at the Gauntlet Gallery.  And hopefully some more things will pop up along the way.  It’s been a great year so far!

Ok, here are 10 quick questions…GO!

-DC or Marvel? Marvel’s got the best movies.  Love them. DC has the best comics, but they’ve really dropped the ball on some of their movies. I’m looking at you Green Lantern!

-Most Desired Super Power? Regeneration.

-Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why? Han Solo. He’s the coolest cat in the universe.

-Best movie snack? Popcorn mixed with peanut M&M’s.

-Growing up, what was your favorite TV show? The Incredible Hulk and Moonlighting in a tie.

-What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on? They can follow me on Twitter @TheCanvasLens or on Facebook. I’m working on website right now but will be a few months.

-What’s your favorite pop culture event? Any time Steven Spielberg releases a new movie.

-Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc) John McLane. I’ve probably seen Die Hard 200 times. I was it every couple of months and always at Christmas. He’s just such an everyman in the first one and it’s the closest you can get to feeling like if you were in that situation that’s how you would really have to perform to survive a terrorist take over. And he’s funny, and cool and he’s Bruce frickin’ Willis and Bruce Willis is awesome!

-Happy or leery about JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars? I think it’s great. He’s done such a great job with Star Trek that it gives me hope for Star Wars.  Would have loved to have seen Brad Bird get a crack at it, but I think Abrams is going to do great.

-Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner sequel? I‘d say a Blade Runner sequel actually just because I think the visuals of a Blade Runner movie are much more interesting than that of a Star Wars movie.  Was that sacrilege? I love Star Wars. Don’t judge me!

Not bad, he only got 4 out of the 10 wrong.  (Solo is a “scoundrel” everyone knows that Lando is the coolest cat in the galaxy!)  Blurppy would like to thank Joe for taking the time to participate and deliver 2 outstanding pieces for our second Poster Posse Project.  I truly hope he takes my advice, I want to see a Die Hard series from Joe Vetoe!

Mondo Brings A Slew Of Impressive Prints To San Diego Comic Con Including New Work From Struzan, Moss, Ansin & More

Actually, that headline doesn’t even begin to describe the awesomeness that Mondo has lined up for this years San Diego Comic Con.  It’s safe to say that their Grand Slam announcement is their print for Stephen King’s Dark Tower by none other than Drew Struzan.  (I mean come on…how do you top THAT?)

Mondo

Well, they may not top it but they sure are locked and loaded with tons of impressive names and prints to follow up Mr Struzan.  Martin, Ansin, Olly Moss, Kevin Tong and Vania Zouravliov are a few that will be displaying their wares at the Mondo booth this year and there are still prints/ artists that they have stashed up their sleeves to announce at a later date.  Who can they be?  Ken Taylor, Tyler Stout, Francesco Francavilla, Jock?  Who knows but I am dying to find out.

Here is their official press release:  Mondo is excited to announce that it will return to San Diego Comic-Con 2013 with incredible new prints, including three colossal pieces of giant monster crushing artwork to celebrate the release Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’Pacific Rim from director Guillermo del Toro on July 12. The Mondo booth will be set up on the main conference floor in booth #936 throughout SDCC, Wednesday July 17 through Sunday July 21. Additionally, new prints from celebrated artists Martin Ansin, Olly Moss and Drew Struzan will be available for presale on Friday, July 12.

“Mondo has always been instrumental in cementing world creation in pop culture- these posters by Ash Thorp and Kevin Tong and Vania Zouravliov capture perfectly the wild, gleeful spirit of Pacific Rim – here’s to a mad world of Mecha and Kaiju!!” said director Guillermo del Toro.

“I love monsters. I love robots. I love Guillermo del Toro. When he asked us to do posters for a movie he was directing with both, how could we say no? G.D.T. wasn’t a bystander in the process, though. As he did in our previous director’s series, he helped hand pick the artist and gave notes on the designs. We’re all very proud to have worked on this project with him,” said Justin Ishmael CEO of Mondo.

Here is a list of Pacific Rim posters that will be available for sale on preview night, Wednesday, July 17th…when the doors open.

Good luck picking a favorite out of these because they are all incredible.  Looks like I know where I will be racing as soon as the doors open on Wednesday evening….

Now let’s take a look at what else Mondo has going on for SDCC.  This year they are doing things differently than they have in the past so for sake of clarity, and sanity I’m going to cut, copy, paste their official instructions for your benefit.

The first change is that we will be pre-selling 3 different editions of posters online before the convention. Each edition will then have a corresponding artist signing taking place upstairs away from our booth at a designated signing area. These posters will ONLY be made available to those who purchase them online in advance.

These pre-sales will all be going ON SALE this Friday, July 12, 2013 via our web-store. To repeat, these WILL NOT be available for purchase at our booth at SDCC, and the signings will not be at our booth. You will claim your posters / attend the signings at the SAILS PAVILION at the convention center (Booth AA07. It is located directly above Hall C where you claim your badges.) Since these are going to be released at the SAILS PAVILION, we have to sell them in advance. Don’t worry, though! If you miss these, we’ll still be having several releases at our booth that won’t be pre-sold.

What does this mean for me…the customer?

Believe it or not… not very much. This actually makes things quite a bit simpler. Several other companies pre-sell items before SDCC and allow for pick up. You alleviate quite a bit of stress by purchasing the item in advance and simply need to get in line to redeem your purchase. Lines will move much faster, and you won’t have to wait around all day.

The one thing you must note, however, is that these purchases are 100% NON TRANSFERABLE. You (and we mean ONLY you) will need to be absolutely, beyond certain that you will be available to pick up the poster you purchase ON THE DESIGNATED DAY.

“I couldn’t make it yesterday!” or “Can my friend / poster-buddy pick it up?” or “I have something that conflicts that day!”

Just want to put this out there now…. if you say any of the above to us at SDCC, it won’t change anything, unfortunately. This is one rule that we cannot bend or break on. If you cannot pick up your poster at the signing, we will make accommodations for it to be available until the end of the day at our actual booth (#936,) but after that you relinquish your rights to the poster, and there are NO REFUNDS. Again, if you cannot pick up the poster in person… with a valid form of ID as confirmation… DO NOT BUY ONE. The name on the ID you provide must match the name on your order to receive your poster. We will make ZERO exceptions on this.

How does picking my poster up work exactly?

All you need to do is bring a form of ID and a print-out of your order confirmation. It’s that simple. The signing time will be on your order form as a reminder (11:30AM PST). Just come find a MONDO representative at the end of the line and we will check you in. It’s that simple!

I missed the online drop! I’ll kill you, Mondo!

This is a reasonable response to have and one that we can only absolve by reminding you that we will still have at least a DOZEN additional releases over the weekend at our actual booth. Not much else has changed, sales-wise, from how we operated our releases last year, with the obvious exception of the pre-sales detailed above.

 A few other minor changes:

We will still have bags and rubber bands available for you, but we can no longer be responsible for bagging / rolling / unclipping binder-clips / etc. We apologize for any inconvenience, but this is simply an effort to keep the line flowing as smoothly and quickly as possible.

We will not be TWEETING to announce our sales. Safety is a huge concern to us and SDCC and we want everyone to be in one piece at the end. Nobody needs a broken bone to show that they’re a fan, so we’re going to have a daily schedule for you guys to check out showing times of releases. We won’t tell you what’s going to be released, but we think you’ll be happy with our releases this year. Also, a lot of media is asking to cover our stuff, so keep an eye online. I’m sure something will pop up before we can show you in line.

PHEW, that’s a lot to take in.  For updates on other things Mondo has going on at SDCC follow them on TWITTER.

Take A Look At The Unused Concept Posters For “Back To The Future” By The Incomparable Drew Struzan

_Drew-Struzan-Self-Portrait-ArtIt’s safe to say that Drew Struzan is a living legend.  His work in film advertising single-handedly helped define a generation of pop culture and raised the bar for generations to come.  His portfolio is unmatched and features posters for such iconic classic as: The Thing, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, Rambo, Big Trouble In Little China, Goonies, Hellboy, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and countless others.

_Drew-Struzan-Star-Wars-PostersOne set of posters for those classic films was the “Back To The Future” franchise.  Drew brought Marty McFly, Doc Brown and Clara Clayton to life with his posters which have stood the test of time just like the movies.  If you know the movies then you are familiar with these posters but have you ever seen the ones that DIDN’T make the cut?  The ones that Drew or the studio DIDN’T use?

Take a look at this set of posters to see just how different things COULD have looked for the franchise that helped make Marty McFly and DeLorean household names from 1985 – 1990 and beyond.

Thanks go out to New Zealand artist Paul Shipper who brought these concept posters to my attention.  Paul has often cited Drew Struzan’s work as his inspiration and Paul’s work closely emulates that of Drew’s which is no small feat.  Some, myself included, have even gone so far as to give Paul the daunting comparison as Struzan’s successor.  I would LOVE to see Struzan come out of retirement and do the posters for the upcoming Star Wars films BUT…if he chooses to remain retired, I truly hope that we get to see Paul Shipper pick up where Struzan has left off.  We may have called Struzan “incomparable” but Shipper is nipping at his heels.  Be sure to head over to Paul’s WEBSITE to check out his impressive and constantly growing portfolio.  (Just remember, when Paul DOES make the announcement that he is doing the poster for the next Star Wars film…I TOLDYA SO!)

Paul Shipper Continues To Wow Fans. This Time With His Poster For Magnolia Pictures “Journey To The West”

PS 2013 Retorospective

Paul Shipper has had quite a run this year.  Gallery shows, comic book covers, Star Wars trading cards, CD covers, Poster Posse Projects and that’s just the half of it.  Well to close out 2013 he wanted to leave on a high note and give his fans something to appreciate and he does that with flying colors.

journey-west-detailPaul was once again asked by Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing to come up with a poster for one of their films.  (The first one he did for them was for Bad Milo) This time out it’s for a movie by Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) called “Journey To The West.”

Bad-Milo-paul-shipper

Here is what Paul had to say about the project over on his blog.

When I first watched the trailer for Stephen Chow’s latest film I thought, Woah! it reminds me of a show I grew up with in the UK… ‘Monkey Magic’… As I researched a little more, turns out that this film by Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) is based on the same material! Very Crazy Cool… The film looks as crazy, if not more so than the TV show I was so fond of as a kid.

It is an absolute pleasure to be asked to illustrate a poster to promote this film for Journey-to-the-west2Magnolia Pictures and Magnet. This is another film that thematically lends itself to this kind of ‘old school’ advertising, my favorite kind!  It is so awesome to see a company looking towards illustrated posters to promote their films and feel very fortunate and proud to be a part of it…

Paul’s impressive work speaks for itself and it is easy to see why fans compare his work to that of the infallible Drew Struzan.  Like Struzan, Shipper captures the essence of a film and his posters make you want to go SEE the film.  Nowadays many movie posters only represent the film they are made for but like the movies themselves, Paul’s prints tell a story.

Journey-to-the-West-High-Resolution

Be on the lookout people because 2014 is going to be Paul Shipper’s year and that is saying quite a bit given what he accomplished in 2013.  I expect some rather “galactic” proportioned announcements in 2014 by this artist from New Zealand.  Follow him on TWITTER or head over to his WEBSITE to browse in awe at his portfolio.

Exclusive Artist Interview: Robert Bruno Brilliantly Balances His Obsession With Pop Culture With A Passion For Sports Illustration

BLURPPY EXCL TMWe recently finished our latest Poster Posse Project and it has been called our “most diverse offering to date.” (It can be viewed HERE and HERE.)  As is customary with each project, we take some time to interview the newest members of the group.  This time out we speak with Brooklyn artist, Robert BrunoAside from his pop culture offering Bruno also has an extensive collection of sports art as well. Here ya go, read along and let’s see if we can learn something about Brooklyn boy, Robert Bruno.

robert-bruno-rick-grimesRick Grimes – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – How long have you been creating art in the pop culture scene? How did you get started?

RB - I’ve been drawn to film since I was a kid. While my friends were out collecting baseball cards and action figures, I was watching and collecting as many movies as I could. Throughout my childhood, while I was in school and now that I’m working in the field I’ve always been drawn to interesting characters in film and television.

BLURPPY – Soooooo…. what you are saying is that you have a massive VHS collection collecting  dust?  Is art your full time job? If not, what else do you do?

RB - I certainly consider myself first and foremost a freelance illustrator. I’ve been working in the freelance world since graduating Pratt Institute in 2012. However like most young illustrators, I need a supplemental job to pay the pays. For the past year I’ve been managing a court reporting agency in downtown Brooklyn. The company was actually kind enough to let me create my own sort of makeshift gallery space inside. I have about 8 pieces displayed throughout the office!

robert-bruno-49ers49ers Superbowl Montage – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – Nice, a mini-gallery at work! Whose work do you admire or collect?

RB - I am obsessed with the old school film posters so naturally Drew Struzan is my hero. Though in addition to Drew I also love the work of Alex Ross, Grzegorz Domaradzki (AKA Gabz), Dennis Gonchar and fellow Poster Posse members Richard Davies and Paul Shipper.

BLURPPY – Hmmmm… Struzan….that name sounds familiar…. I”m going to have to look him up.  I was thinking about Alex Ross the other day.  I have yet to come across a piece of his work that I DON’T like.  Considering how much stuff he puts out, I’d say that’s impressive. What one print, by another artist, blows your mind?

RB - I could probably name anyone of Drew’s posters but one piece in particular is Gabz’ “Walking Dead” print. The masterful compositional skill paired with the incredible control of color and negative space just blew my mind.

twd001“The Walking Dead” by Gabz

BLURPPY – I’d say Gabz is a ‘master’ of negative space.  It always adds to the print, never takes away. With so much art being produced these days, how do you keep things fresh and interesting?

RB - I am always reading a new article on photoshop tips and techniques or watching a demo or new tutorial. As cliche as is sounds, in this industry you really do learn something new everyday. I feel that for myself as a digital artist, the better handle I have on the techniques and programs I use the more time I can focus on keeping my ideas ‘fresh’ and unique.

robert-bruno-sons-of-anarchy“Sons of Anarchy” – Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – I also know a special ‘secret’ resource for this as well, but like I said, that’s “SECRET” and you already use it.  Besides working on BLURPPY’s Poster Posse Projects, what is your dream project?

RB - In addition to pop culture based art, I’m a sports fanatic. I grew up playing baseball, football, and running track. While I wasn’t nearly good enough at any of the three to go far I settled for the next best thing in my mind…creating illustrations and paintings for them. Over half of my personal work is sports related art. I guess my dream job would be working as an illustrator for ESPN or Nike.

robert-bruno-air-jordan“Flight” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – Both of those would be a feather in your cap.  I’d like to see you do something for the Dan Patrick Show and have it up in his “man cave.”  If you weren’t creating highly desirable works of art for adoring fans, what else would you do?

RB - I would probably look into teaching art in either high-school or college. I was fortunate enough to have some truly inspiring teachers and professors in school and I would love the opportunity to pass down some of that inspiration to the next generation of artists.

BLURPPY – Very noble of you.  What movies are you excited to see this year/ next year?

RB - I’ll start with a film I saw this past weekend, the “Lone Survivor.” Wow. One of the most awe inspiration films I have ever seen. If you haven’t seen it yet, stop reading this and go do so! Aside from that looks to be a pretty exciting year in the box office, I spent about 30 hours creating my piece for PP5, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” so naturally I’m pretty excited for that. Just to name a few others…”300 Rise of an Empire”, “X:Men Days of Future Past”, “Noah”, and “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” all look promising.

Captain America Robert Bruno“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – What is your favorite print from your portfolio and why?

RB - I’m pretty critical of all my stuff, but I guess I would say my Game of Thrones inspired ‘Last Targaryen’ piece. I just felt that I was successful in achieving the mood and dynamic of that particular storyline in a single image.

GOT_TLD‘Last Targaryen’ by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – You had me when you said, “Daenerys Targaryen“.  She is so awesome and incredibly ho… wait, you did say “Daenerys Targaryen” didn’t you? What’s your biggest pet peeve about the pop culture art scene?

RB - It is so saddening to hear about the next blockbuster movie coming out and then see the poster be a giant photo of the leads head with a gun. I don’t understand the marketing standpoint that has the film studios using less and less illustrated posters and more and more cheesy filtered photographs. I want to be inspired and drawn to go and see the darn movie, a massive overexposed photo of Tom Cruises face doesn’t do it for me.

BLURPPY – Well, that really is one of the driving forces behind the Poster Posse so you have landed in the right place. What has been your best experience to date, in the pop culture art scene?

RB - To be very honest, having the recent opportunity to take part and collaborate in these gallery shows like Blurppy and Hero Complex Gallery. Not only is the subject matter killer, but the opportunity to work alongside so many great illustrators, and more importantly, great people is a real treat.

Robert-bruno-the-grey“The Grey” by Robert Bruno

robert-bruno-Ghostbusters_FB“Ghostbusters” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – The Posse is packed with passionate, persuasive,  personnel that continually push and propel each other with every poster project. (Say THAT 5 times fast.) What was your most embarrassing moment as an artist?

RB - Hah oh this is easy. In my freshman year of college I was required to take a class call LCD (Light Color & Design) We had this extended assignment over the winter break to do a ‘Holiday Portrait.’ Me, as someone who really enjoys painting people decided to take the assignment very literally. I painted both myself and my sister standing in front of our Christmas tree decked out in ugly Christmas sweaters. Turns out my professor was trying to stress a more symbolic meaning of the holidays to you. I’ll never forget showing up to the critique with my glorified holiday self portrait and seeing everyone else’s thought provoking, symbolic paintings. It wasn’t even as if I could just pretend like mine wasn’t mine….it was a giant painting of me. My professor, the pleasant man he was, always had us line the work up in a single row and would stand in the back of the room and point to each one with a laser pointer. Of course mine was the first to get pointed at. He simply pointed at it, disapprovingly shook his head and moved onto the next piece.

BLURPPY – Hahahahahaha…you HAVE to share that piece with me sometime. (I won’t ask you to do it now, here in this forum.)  What is the best interview question you’ve ever been asked and what was your answer?

RB - I was once asked where I draw my inspiration from. After thinking about it, I realized that I’m lucky enough to wake up every morning and do something that I love. I am so thankful to my family for having the faith and confidence in me to follow my dreams and aspirations that I guess in a way I’m inspired by them.

Robert-burno-sherlock“Sherlock Holmes” by Robert Bruno

BLURPPY – I’m right there with you.  My wife LITERALLY supports my endeavors every single day and THAT is a blessing.  What do you have on tap for 2014 and don’t give us that line, “Lots of stuff , just can’t talk about it yet”

RB - Oh I’ll talk about it. I have a habit of packing my schedule as tight as it can be. I actually rather enjoy working under extreme pressure. In 2014 I’ll do just about as many gallery shows as I possibly can in addition to taking on freelance gigs, private commissions, and maybe if I’m lucky a few personal pieces. I am particularly excited about several upcoming Poster Posse projects along with shows from the Hero Complex Gallery and Ltd. Gallery. Unfortunately I really can’t talk about them though…

Somehow I just KNEW there would be stuff you COULDN’T talk about!  Ok, the next batch of questions are meant to be rapid fire.  Say whatever comes to mind and just know that I will KNOW if you aren’t being honest.

Robert-bruno-avengers-assemble“Avengers Assemble” by Robert Bruno

- DC or Marvel?

Marvel, though the story of Superman is the most unique and interesting storyline in any comic.

- Most Desired Super Power?

I think the ability to read peoples minds would be pretty beneficial at times…

- Who is your favorite Star Wars Character and why?

Although I think Darth Maul was one of the most bad-ass characters I’ve ever seen, I have to go with Vadar. Anakin Skywalker is such a tragic character, he sold his soul to evil in an effort to protect the ones he loved. In the process he lost his arms/legs/most of the skin on his face but gained that iconic black suit, mask, breathing device and voice that we all love.

- Best movie snack?

Anything that doesn’t make noise!

-  What is your favorite gadget?

Love my graphics tablet, I use the Wacom Intuous4. Medium size to be specific.

- Growing up, what was your favorite TV show?

-I really loved the “Batman Beyond” series.

- What’s the best way for fans to keep up with all you have going on?

I use social media a lot, I update my Facebook and Tumblr illustration pages quite often and post in-depth detailed shots of my work on my Behance page.

BLURPPY – What’s your favorite pop culture event?

Probably the New York City Comic Con, I live in Brooklyn so that’s most accessible for me.

BLURPPY – Who is your favorite fictional character of all time and why? (Can be comic books, movies, literature, etc)

I’m gonna have to name two because my girlfriend makes fun of my ‘man-crush’ of both. Without a doubt Rick Grimes from the Walking Dead and Gannicus from the series Spartacus. Rick is an incredibly complex character who has really transformed and developed as the series has progressed. Gannicus is just awesome, he fights, he drinks, and he has lots and lots of sex. Enough said.

- Would you rather design the poster for an upcoming Star Wars movie or the upcoming Blade Runner prequel?

I’m a 90′s guy so Blade Runner was just before my time, Star Wars was re-released in the theaters when I was around 6 or 7 and it was love at first site. So Star Wars hah.

Junior-MintsTo recap I think we can all agree that Robert was alluding to the fact that Junior Mints are the BEST movie snack EVER!  I’m sure we learned some more in-depth stuff but for me, food always wins out.  HUGE thanks to Robert for taking the time to participate in the Poster Posse Projects and for also answering my questions.   Stay tuned because he has signed on for additional Projects and I can’t WAIT to see what he comes up with.  Head over to his STORE to get some awesome stuff that will make your walls happy.

Like many of you, the fantasy work of Frank Frazetta has long been amongst my favorites.  Well director Robert Rodriguez is also a huge fan and he will be hosting a pop up museum down in Austin, Texas from March 8th thru March 16th at the SXSW festival that features the work of Frazetta and some other legendary artists.

Here is the official announcement that has me, yet again, WISHING I lived in Austin as I would LOVE to go to this.

For a limited time only during SXSW, Robert Rodriguez is proud to launch a museum featuring his own specially curated collection of art which includes the work of celebrated American artist Frank Frazetta. Considered to be the most influential fantasy artist in history, Frazetta contributed iconic artwork to classic works of fiction for Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan& John Carter of Mars among others. The gallery will be open to the public daily from Saturday, March 8th – 16th from Noon – 8 pm. The museum is located at 920 Congress Ave. in Austin, TX. The gallery will have a $20 entrance fee benefiting the Frazetta Estate’s preservation of the art for a new Frank Frazetta museum. DEATH_DEALER Send

The gallery will also feature an original SIN CITY masterpiece by FRANK MILLER, original art by DREW STRUZAN including his rendering of Sylvester Stallone for the movie poster FIRST BLOOD, and original poster art for THE THING. Original paintings by New Pop Art master SEBASTIAN KRÜGER including hyper real paintings of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Danny Trejo. Bronzed art sculptures from CLETE SHIELDS. Shields’ work has been commissioned by Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, and Samuel L. Jackson.

In addition, the gallery will feature SIN CITY character self-portrait paintings from cast members, including Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga, Rosario Dawson, and Josh Brolin, painted with Robert and his mentor, artist George Yepes during the making of SIN CITY 2. There will also be a selection of hand numbered giclée prints of Frazetta pieces photographed and printed by Robert Rodriguez available for purchase. Proceeds from the prints will benefit the Frazetta Estate to preserve the art for a new Frank Frazetta Museum.

The idea for the museum has been long in the making. Robert Rodriguez has been touring Frank Frazetta original art at Comic Con and Wizard Con to continue the wish of Frank Frazetta, a friend and collaborator of Robert’s who always wanted audiences to see his paintings in person. The original Frazetta museum in upstate New York closed after the passing of Frank Frazetta in 2010.

The new Rodriguez museum features other world class artists Robert has also worked with and studied under over the years, with art that he’s collected himself, and others that are on exclusive loan for this event. The FRANK FRAZETTA COLLECTION has an unprecedented amount of original masterpieces including Death Dealer, Egyptian Queen, At the Earth’s Core, Conan, and Dark Kingdom, as well a rare painting Frazetta did for the movie FROM DUSK TIL DAWN among others. 12 masterpieces total.

_frank_frazetta_death-dealer-II“Death Dealer II” – Frank Frazetta

“This has to be the most kick ass museum in the world,” said filmmaker Robert Rodriguez. “For one, it’s the only place you can see original Frank Frazetta art, 12 masterpiece paintings total, alongside original art by Frank Miller, Drew Struzan, Sebastian Kruger and Clete Shields. Throw in character paintings by the cast of Sin City 2 and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and you will never see anything like this event anywhere, in any museum. I’m very excited to be showcasing this mind-blowing art by my favorite artists and collaborators in Austin.”

Robert Bruno Pays Tribute To Drew Struzan And Indiana Jones With His Latest Piece

Harrison Ford made Indiana Jones a household name with the first 3 films in the series back in the 80’s.  (We’re giving him a pass on Crystal Skull and pretending like it didn’t happen.)  Another individual, Drew Struzan, also bewildered fans with his incredible movie poster art during this time.  (And he still does!) Ford has even credited Struzan for “making him look good.”

Poster Posse member Robert Bruno was recently commissioned to do an Indiana Jones piece and in it, he pays homage to both Ford and Struzan.  We asked Bruno about the project and here is what he had to say.

“Indiana Jones is probably one of the most well known and beloved characters in American Film. More importantly, the Indiana Jones franchise has produces some of the most beautiful artwork and posters i’ve ever seen. This rendition was my personal nod at the great Drew Struzan. I tried to emulate a bit of Drew’s signature style while keeping it consistent with my own style.”

Robert is making a very limited run of these for fans of the film.  CLICK HERE to get your copy today.  You can follow Robert on HIS quest for the Holy Grail on TWITTER or check out his portfolio over on his OFFICIAL WEBSITE.

Any time Drew Struzan commits pencil to paper it’s noteworthy.  Drew is a living legend and responsible for more beloved movie posters than you can even begin to comprehend.  Bottleneck Gallery in New York has commissioned Drew to do a print for their screening of Guillermo del Toro’sPan’s Labyrinth  Here is what they had to say about the event.

a

We’ve teased this project recently, so we’re ecstatic to finally be able to reveal one of the biggest projects we’ve ever worked on: A Pan’s Labyrinth screening featuring Drew Struzan’s masterful artwork for the film as a print!

Guillermo Del Toro, the visionary director behind Pan’s Labyrinth, commissioned Drew Struzan to create a painting for the film before it was released. We’ve been in awe of Drew’s original painting for years, and we’re incredibly proud to present the first and only screen printed version of this piece.

Pan’s Labyrinth is a dark fairy tale inspired film that boasts some of the most memorable and impressive beasts on film. We think Drew’s art for the movie is hauntingly beautiful, featuring Ofelia huddled in the Faun’s arms, with tones and colors emphasizing the dark tone of the movie.
